High structure course design for chemistry
Monday July 21, 2025 9:30am - 11:15am MDT
This workshop will give participants an introduction to high structure course design which scaffolds students through the learning process via pre-class content acquisition and formative assessment, in-class active learning and practice, after-class review and formative assessment, and frequent summative assessment. High structure course design is discipline agnostic and can be tailored to any course topic, course size, modality, and institution. There is an ever-growing body of literature that supports the efficacy of using high structure course design to improve student outcomes including an overall improvement in student learning, narrowing or closing of achievement or performance gaps, increased student feelings of belonging, and the development of students' metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills. Participants will leave this workshop with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to design their own high structure course from scratch or to modify an existing course into a high structure course.
