Traditional high school science learning has been critiqued as irrelevant to the lives of many students, especially to those who are  not in the college science pipeline. Extending the traditional epistemic boundaries of high school chemistry to include the lenses of history and politics, students working as both scientists and activists ("Transformative Intellectuals", Giroux, 1985) have used chemistry  to study science “problems” relevant to their
communities and to present solutions resulting in socially transformative education.
